The third installment of the Shaggy & Friends charity concert for the Bustamante Hospital for Children raised $32 million (JMD) for the Bustamante Hospital for Children in St Andrew, Jamaica! The concert, which was held on the Lawns of Jamaica House, featured artists such as Shaggy, Tarrus Riley, Romain Virgo, Tami Chynn, Wayne Marshall, Tifa, Future Fambo, Maxi Priest, Eve, Half Pint, Agent Sasco, Mr Vegas, Gyptian, Cocoa Tea, Beres Hammond and Lauryn Hill. It was the biggest of the three so far.

Shaggy announced the results at a press conference, held at the Bustamante Hospital for Children. The proceeds will furnish the pediatric hospital’s new ICU/cardiac ward in partnership with Chain Of Hope Jamaica, a group of volunteer doctors and nurses who perform surgeries each year on our children with heart problems.

Shaggy says: “I am heartened by the outpouring of support this year by so many Jamaicans and I pledge to continue to support this cause and encourage Jamaicans to do so as well!” Watch a video of the press conference below thanks to the Jamaica Observer, or check the photos on Caribbean Celebs

Shaggy to be honored with the 2011 International Humanitarian Award by American Friends of Jamaica today

Shaggy to be honored with 2011 International Humanitarian Award
Shaggy will be honored with the 2011 International Humanitarian Award by the American Friends of Jamaica (AFJ) at their 7th Annual Peacock Soiree today! The event takes place at Jungle Island in Miami, Florida and it is hosted by Jamaican Ambassador Sue Cobb, the president and the board of directors of the AFJ. Entertainment will be provided by the Jolly Boys. Proceeds of the gala are to benefit Jamaican charities in education, health care and economic development.

The event will take place amidst the tropical elegance of Miami’s Jungle Island with cocktails, dinner and dancing well into the night. The Peacock Soiree promises to be spectacular, chic and fun attracting dignitaries, sport stars and business professionals.

Shaggy has always lived on the premise that “to whom much is given, much is required”. What began as donations of medical equipment and visits to the Bustamente Hospital For Children to distribute gifts during the holidays, paint rooms, donate beds and creation of a garden, developed into the Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation. He recruited business associates, fellow recording artists and sponsors to assist in hosting an annual Shaggy & Friends charity event in which all proceeds are donated to the pediatric hospital to help defray the cost of medical equipment.

Shaggy also sought other avenues to raise funds; he co-wrote “Shaggy Parrot“, an educational book and cd for children. He sang the voice of the main character and donated his proceeds to charity. Shaggy recorded Save a Life for the Bustamente Hospital for Children and Rise Again for the Digicel Haiti Relief Fund for earthquake victims. Shaggy has remained humble, taking his career in strides. He continues to break down barriers for those who dare to follow in his footsteps.

Jamaican ambassador Sue Cobb, AFJ’s Chairperson comments, “Shaggy is the essence of the charitable spirit we celebrate in our continued support of the Jamaican society and its people. The Peacock Soiree is a celebration of this spirit for all to enjoy while raising funds for good causes”.

(Shaggy) Yeah!

We all gotta do a part
(Gramps Morgan) Ey, ey, we can make it right
(Shaggy) Represent, I dare you!

(Gramps Morgan) Well I dare you to make a difference and I dare you take a stance (let them know Gramps!)
And I dare you to think of someone else, who’s in need of a helping hand
(Christopher Martin) What if I dare you to show our children what it really means to love (yeah yeah)
Well I dare you to just imagine, there’s nothing we can’t rise above
(Etana) And I dare you to be a person, with the will to make it right
And I dare you to have the conscience, to the cause and join the fight (wha yuh a seh!)
(Da’Ville)Well I dare you take a moment, to imagine how it feels
I dare you to take a look at someone else’s pain and offer some relief

(Chorus)
Take a stand, make it right
Lend a hand, save a life (save a life)
Understand, it’s alright
Lend a hand, save a life

(Marcia Griffiths) Should I dare you to be a person, with the will to make things right (yes sister Marcia)
I dare you to have the conscience, see the causant of the fight
(Luciano) Could I dare you to take a moment, to imagine how it feels
Take look at someone else’s pain and try to offer some relief
(Tesanne Chin) Well I dare you to make a difference and I dare you to take a stand
Let me dare you to think of someone else who’s in need of a helping hand
(Freddy McGregor) What if I dare you to show our children, what it really means to love
Could I dare you to just imagine, there is nothing that we can’t right

(Chorus)
Take a stand, make it right (we can make it right)

Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation, Shaggy & Friends Benefit Concert!

Shaggy is doing a beautiful thing for the Bustamente Hospital for Children in Kingston, Jamaica, and you can help! The Bustamente Hospital is the main pediatric hospital in the West Indies, which’ resources to treat children are stretched to the limit because of a lack of facilities. Expensive medical equipment and a lack of public and private funding counteract the hospital’s ability to provide the necessary health care required to treat each and every child.

Shaggy has been supporting the hospital for years and he now created the Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation to help raise funds for the hospital to save many more children’s lives. You can read all about it on Shaggy’s official Shaggy Make a Difference Foundation site. It has information about how you can help and about Shaggy’s upcoming benefit concert. The site also has a lot of photos and videos.

The Shaggy & Friends benefit concert, 1 ticket equals saving 1 life, will be held on Saturday January 3 2009 on the Jamaica House Lawn featuring

none other than Shaggy himself, Macy Gray, Buju Banton, Sean Paul, J. Holliday, Tony Rebel, Sean Kingston, Tarrus Riley, Luciano, Tesanna Chin, Da’Ville, Freddie McGregor, Etana, Allison Hinds, Elephant Man, Marcia Griffiths, Tyson Beckford and many more.

The gates open at 6 PM, the concert starts at 8 PM. Tickets are available at Susie’s Bakery, White Bone’s Restaurant and Music Mart at Twin Gates Plaza. All proceeds will be donated to the Bustamente Hospital for Children!
