Shaggy’s Sugarcane on VEVO, The Fader Shaggy interview and get Shaggy’s Sugarcane for free today!

Sugarcane featured on VEVO
VEVO features Shaggy’s awesome new Sugarcane video!

“Sir Shaggy, the reggae genius behind classics like summertime slow jam “Angel” and the smooth bump-and-grind diddy “Boombastic” is back with a new song, highlighting the tasty highlights of his hometown. And, thanks to him, we now want candy at 8:30 in the morning. Bags and bags and bags of sugary sugar candy sugar. Or sugar packets. Or candy.

Being seductively straightforward about the whole thing, Shaggy gives a visiting tourist a bag of native treat sugarcane, and effectively pulls her away from friends to show her the good times around town. (Don’t worry, it’s not a kidnapping. She’s chillin’ on the beach and swaying her hips. No one shakes their booty when they’re not having a blast). Her sister goes home and rats her our for staying in Jamaica, and her mom, triumphantly, declares she’s going to Jamaica to get her daughter back. Or so we think… (!!!!!!)

If there’s one thing that’s clear about this video, it’s that “sugarcane” is most definitely not a euphemism for something. Nothing in particular. Nothing at all! It’s just magic and love and happy good times that get everyone together… Take a looksie this guilty pleasure and not at all innuendo-filled summertime singsong, stat.” Read more on VEVO and take a look at the beautiful and hilarious Sugarcane video!

Heatwave Shaggy interview: music, One Love Peace Festival and more
Loukia C interviewed Shaggy for Heatwave ahead of his concert at the One Love Peace Festival on July 31. Was it Shaggy or not? How has Shaggy’s music evolved and what’s the importance of cross-over music? How did Bob Marley’s music influence Shaggy? What can people expect from the One Love Peace Festival? Read the answers and much more in the Heatwave interview!

We’re looking forward to having you here in the UK, are you looking forward to performing?
“Absolutely! It’s been about five years since I have been here and actually done a concert in the UK. So you know, Wembley Arena is a fitting venue for the occasion and I think and the occasion is fitting as it’s for a good cause. The best way to stop violence is through music: the celebration of music is a celebration of peace, love and harmony.”

As you mentioned, the One Love festival is supporting a campaign against gun and knife crime. Is this something you feel strongly about?
“Well there’s always been an issue about these things in dancehall and West Indian culture in itself, so yes. A lot of people have thought of dancehall as the music of violence and guns and homophobia. But I remember when reggae music was the music of sun, fun, peace, love and weed; you know what I mean?

Is it important to cross over?
Absolutely! We have to engage with it. When a hip hop artist goes on tour you see all these big sponsors for them but this doesn’t happen for reggae artists. We need to get a level of consumerism for reggae music.

And your new album Summer In Kingston – what was the stimulation for that?
You’re going to love it and you’re going to live with it. It’s a real feel good album. It’s only got eight tracks and will only be released digitally.

The first single, Sugarcane, is a catchy little number…
Yes! It’s that cheeky, tongue in cheek, ambiguous type of song with a comedic undertone, which is true of Shaggy. When you listen to it it’s uplifting – it’s feel good music. It’s a new Shaggy, with a new vibe.

Shaggy supports new mentoring system
Shaggy and the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, are teaming up to launch a new mentoring system, to encourage more Londoners to become mentors, at City Hall at 9.30 AM today!

A quote from the interview: How would describe the sound and special style for this new Summer in Kingston album? What made you decide to go for a digital album?

Summer in Kingston
I just wanted to create a real feel good album, when you’ve been doing it for as much time I as I have, you want to re-invent and do something that still lives. It’s a digital album and the best part is, I’m giving you a recession price – $2.99! A sign of a appreciation more so than anything, I just wanted to get everybody back, involved, feelin’ it and lovin’ it.

Next year: physical cd release with more songs to be added!
It’s a 2 year project that we are having, we will eventually put the hard copy out with more tracks to it. At the moment there are 8. Sugarcane is the first single which is doing really well over here in the states, lots of buzz, lots of vibes…. we’re doing our thing, so fingers crossed. Read more.

Shaggy in Rolling Stone Magazine: “Shaggy Talks Crossover Success and Staying PG-Rated”

ShaggyGrammy-winning Jamaican artist Shaggy took dancehall crossover to unprecedented heights, first with 1995’s platinum Boombastic album and then again in 2001 with the six-times-platinum Hotshot, which featured dancehall’s first Number One pop single. This year, in time for the beach comes his seventh release: Summer in Kingston (available digitally now).

To celebrate the release, Mr. Boombastic closed down the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, for a massive free block party last Saturday, performing alongside dancehall artists Bounty Killer and Elephant Man. Backstage, he spoke with Rolling Stone about breaking records, joining the Marines and making dancehall go pop.

Speaking about his charity work for the Bustamente Hospital for Children in Jamaica: “All of it was formed on impulse, because of what I saw at a hospital one day. I went to visit someone there and saw the state of the place. I saw this little girl with a bullet lodged in her head and I said, “I’ve got to do something.” So I said, “I’m gonna do a concert – in 8 weeks. We’re gonna make it happen and failure is not an option.” They told me I needed a foundation, so we did it – simple as that.”

Shaggy, who hails from Rae Town in Kingston, Jamaica, returned to his dancehall roots with Church Heathen after his mainstream success with songs like Angel, It Wasn’t Me and so on. He says: “I came back to dancehall because I have naysayers, and I always want to silence them. I remember after “Hotshot” and “It Wasn’t Me,’ everybody was saying, “Yeah, but it’s not dancehall,” and, “He can’t do dancehall,’ and some were going as far as saying, “He’s not Jamaican.” But I started from dancehall, from sound systems! So I had to come back here and prove that.”

Now he’s back with an awesome new album, entitled Summer in Kingston. Asked about Summer in Kingston, he says: “It’s a feel-good album, a fan appreciation album for a recession price, as I call it: $2.99. Eight tracks of eargasmic pleasure, digital only. A hard copy would mean paying for distribution, packaging and so on, but if it’s digital you can make it as low as possible so all of your fans can get it.”

Did you get Shaggy’s amazing new album Summer in Kingston yet? It’s an 8 track feel-good album with great summer vibes, available for a time-limited special price of just $2.99 on iTunes!

Billboard.com Shaggy interview and Summer in Kingston review: “Shaggy Makes Stateside Return With ‘Summer in Kingston””

“I got to get some new pages in my passport,” says Shaggy in a recent interview with Billboard.com, “I constantly tour every year, around the clock.” Billboard caught up with diamond-selling reggae artist Shaggy and talked to Bob McLynn of Crush Management, the New York based firm (Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes, Train and more) that now manages Shaggy.

“The guy really is an icon out there,” says Bob McLynn of Crush Management, who signed Shaggy because “Shaggy had more good songs than any other new artist we’ve ever seen. You listen to any rhythm and pop station, and every summer you’re still going to hear some old Shaggy songs,” McLynn adds. “He’s still current in terms of his songs are still getting played… And when you hear the new stuff, its like, ‘OK, we could do something with this because it’s that good.'”

Shaggy’s awesome new album “Summer in Kingston” will be a digital-only release and will arrive aggressively priced at $2.99 through iTunes, Amazon and other major digital outlets, at least until Labor Day. Billboard.com writes about Sugar Cane and Just Another Girl, two tracks on the great new album: “Sugar Cane has all the hallmarks of a Shaggy summer smash: an island vibe, a naughty double-entendre.” “The album’s other sure shot is Just Another Girl, a roots-reggae banger featuring Jamaican star Tarrus Riley singing a tasty vintage hook.”

Did you get Shaggy’s awesome new album Summer in Kingston yet? It’s available on iTunes for just $2.99, get it now and your summer will be extra hot!
