Shaggy honors deceased Nobel Prize winner in Kenya

Shaggy honors Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Muta Maathai
Shaggy planted a tree honoring the late Wangari Muta Maathai, the first woman from the African continent to win the Nobel Peace Prize who died last Monday. Watch footage of the ceremony and an interview video with Shaggy!

Shaggy is in Kenya for his performance at the Tusker All Stars concert at the Carnivore Grounds in Nairobi, Kenya on October 1. He says:

“It’s an honor to be a part of the festivity and what’s going on. Obviously, I heard the whole story about the planting of the trees by this person and pretty much the fact that we’ve lost such a great person who was involved in the development of this forest. These are great people who you can follow.”

Wangari Muta Maathai was instrumental in both the environmental and human rights movements in Africa. She was best known for establishing the Pan African Green Belt Movement, which was described by the Nobel Prize Organization as a “broad-based, grassroots organization whose main focus is the planting of trees with women groups in order to conserve the environment and improve the quality of life.”

Maathai helped women plant more than 20 million trees on farms, schools and church compounds. She was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a PhD (Biology). She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
