Shaggy, Tarrus Riley and Ne-Yo at the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival (video and photos)

On Thursday night, the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival opened celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jamaica’s independence. The night featured only reggae performances by among others Shaggy, Marcia Griffiths, Maxi Priest, Etana, John Holt, Mykal Rose and Christopher Martin and saw a record turnout.

Shaggy, Yellowman, Marcia Griffiths, John Holt, Maxi Priest, Richie Stephens, Derrick Morgan and Lloyd Parkes were honored for their past, current and future contribution to the development of Jamaica’s music at the Jamaica Jazz & Blues Festival!

Shaggy’s performance
Shaggy gave a great performance! He entered performing Sugarcane, Strength of a Woman and Angel with Rayvon, after which he brought Tarrus Riley on stage for a live rendition of Just Another Girl (off Shaggy’s Grammy nominated album Summer in Kingston & the Kingston 13 Riddim, to be released on January 31)!

Tarrus Riley went on performing She’s Royal and Shaggy performed Bad Man Don’t Cry, What’s Love and his upcoming single Dame (to be released on the Summer in Kingston Lava Edition, in stores February 7) accompanied by Aisha Davis.

When the first sounds of Shaggy’s worldwide number one hit It Wasn’t Me were resonating through Trelawny, Shaggy brought another surprise guest on stage… It was Ne-Yo, who performed It Wasn’t Me together with Shaggy! Ne-Yo also performed Miss Independent and Shaggy and Tony Gold concluded the festival’s first night with Hey Sexy Lady. Attendees and live stream viewers say the concert was amazing!

Gregory Isaacs’ Thanksgiving Service
Legendary reggae singer Gregory Isaacs passed away in London by the end of October. Yesterday his funeral and the thanksgiving service for his life were held at the National Indoor Sports Center in Kingston, Jamaica. The service, ‘A Red Rose For Gregory‘, was filled with musical tributes from among others Shaggy, Ken Boothe, Etana, Carlene Davis, Freddy McGregor, Judy Mowatt, The Tamlins and AJ Brown. Shaggy performed a tribute to the Cool Ruler at the Thanksgiving Service, singing Gregroy Isaacs’ Front Door (I Don’t Wanna Be Lonely Tonight) and telling a personal memory. Shaggy wrote about Gregory Isaacs’ passing on Twitter: “R.I.P Gregory, Your music will live on forever.. My condolences go out to all of your family!” and “Took me a minute ..but the cool Ruler will be missed…one of the 1st person in this business to show me luv!! R.I.P. Gregory!!!”.
