September 29 Part IV - Shaggy honors deceased Nobel Prize winner
Shaggy planted a tree honoring the late Wangari Muta Maathai, the first woman from the African continent to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Watch footage of the ceremony and an interview video with Shaggy here!
Wangari Muta Maathai was instrumental in both the environmental and human rights movements. She is best known for establishing the Pan African Green Belt Movement, which the Nobel organization describes as a "broad-based, grassroots organization whose main focus is the planting of trees with women groups in order to conserve the environment and improve the quality of life."
Maathai helped women plant more than 20 million trees on farms, schools and church compounds. She also was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a PhD (Biology). She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004.
